A New Twist

Fashion and style are constantly evolving. From Joanna Lumley's Purdey‚, to Jennifer Aniston's‚Rachel‚ of the 1990's, from Twiggy's,Urchin‚ to Kylie Minogue's classic 80's perm, there are certain looks that scream a certain era. Although perhaps wearing them to The Bridges on a Saturday afternoon would look slightly dated today, these styles were radical departures from the fashion conventions of the time, with their celebrity wearers pioneering looks that would change the way we dressed across the globe.

On rare occasions however, a hairstyle can look fresh for decades. Famous cuts like the bob, which can trace its roots back the 1920's, have stayed current by gradually changing with the times and adapting to their new surroundings. Whilst a straight copy of a 1920's cut would look too old-fashioned and retro, modern twists on classic cuts can breathe a whole new life into the originals. Pixie Lott's decision to swap her trademark boho look for a fabulous textured bob gives her a cool 1960's vibe, but her textured lengths ensure the look doesn't feel too dated. What used to be a very strong, angular, almost masculine look perfectly defined an era when women were starting to take control of their lives and play a man's game, but an updated version of this is a much softer, gentler looking cut without the sharp edges. In fact, the most modern of bobs look somewhere between an old-school bob and a 1970's pudding bowl cut with its round edges, combined with a much longer fringe, again giving a softer overall impression. Thanks to the GHD ceramic irons we stock in salon today, the modern bob is a possibility for anyone who is willing to give it the time!

For the extroverted fashion pioneers amongst you, looking to styles of the past is often a way to add a large dose of cutting-edge chic to your look. With the help of modern products, styles that would have previously taken a thousand hair pins and multiple cans of hairspray can be achieved with ease. L'Oreal Professionnel's techni.art Volume Architect and Full Volume Extra are great products to create anything from the voluminous sophistication of Audrey Hepburn to the quirky cool of the late Amy Winehouse. Sunderland's very own culinary celebrity Stacie Stewart's image is defined by her dramatic 'do', and its surprisingly easy to create jaw-dropping styles in your own home. By working with hair that is a day or two old (i.e. not freshly washed) you will not need to hammer it with hairspray ‚ just start on the sections from behind your fringe or fringe area, backcomb it after preparing the hair with product and secure it in place. Easy!

Be it a sleek, professional style or a cutting edge coiffure, my team are always more than happy to talk over any ideas you may have. You never know- it may be your hair that people will be writing articles about in years to come!
