Things that go bump...
Wacky outfits, cross dressing popstars and Beyonce's baby bump defined this year's MTV Video Music Awards, explains Susan Hall of Reds Hair and Beauty, East Herrington. But, like all big events in the music calendar, it proved a great opportunity to see what's trending in the world of celebrity hair.
It was interesting then, to discover that wavy hair was the biggest trend at the awards ceremony this weekend. But, as we all know, wearing the same hairstyle as your peers is almost as much of a disaster as stepping out in the same dress, so there was a great variety of styles out on the red carpet.
Having just the other week discussed Katy Perry and her coloured curls, the awards saw her sporting retro, 1940s-esque waves. It was the colour however, that will be the staffroom talk of many a salon: a shocking shade of mauve-pink! According to industry insiders, Katy and her colourist have been working to achieve the singer's perfect hue for the past few months. She is a colourist's dream‚ always willing to take risks to achieve a groundbreaking look, and she's certainly forging her own trend with her latest colour.
That said, such an exotic colour is never easy to attain, never mind to pull off, so I'd recommend having a chat with one of my team before attempting to copy her surprising shade. What suits Hollywood doesn't necessarily suit Holmeside!
Adele, as retro as usual, went for a sixties bouffant hairstyle that would have required plenty of backcombing and heated rollers. As we discussed a couple of weeks ago, 1960s, full-bodied hairstyles are big news for the new season and Adele perfectly tapped into the new trend. She played up the retro vibe with heavy black liner and soft brown smokey eyes- a fantastic look for this autumn.
Katie Holmes opted for low-key but voluminous waves: she's not a singer, so I'm guessing she didn't want to steal the show! The key to getting this look right is to spray a thermoactive spray, L’Oreal’s Tecni.Art Constructor for instance, throughout the hair before parting the hair and tonging from the cheekbones down, making sure to leave the ends out. Staying away from the roots will give you a really natural looking wave, and can be easily achievable with our fantastic new range of GHD stylers currently in stock. Finish by using your fingers and a little L'Oreal Play Ball Density Material to massage smoothness and manageability into the style. Easily achievable and versatile, Katie Holmes' classy look certainly proved popular with the girls in the salon!
Given her recent news, it is little wonder that Beyonce looked glowing. To compliment her one shoulder gown, she chose a side ponytail and a side fringe to soften the look. To look just as bootylicious, follow my above advice with the soft curls, before pulling into a side pony tail with a band. The ponytail was full of soft waves, and really added an extra dynamic to the texture of the style.
Which wave will you wear?
